I’m fascinated by the “fluctuation” that arises when opposing concepts are expressed simultaneously. For example, something can be both soothing and disturbing at the same time. I find comfort in the invisible “fluctuation” that results from this. “Fluctuation” refers to the irregular temporal and spatial “swing” or “variation” that occurs around something that appears regular or a certain average value. It’s the “just right amount of irregularity” seen in nature, such as fire, wind, and the murmuring of a stream, and it gives humans a sense of security and comfort. Furthermore, rather than being overly perfect, a natural “fluctuation” creates a sense of vitality and comfort. That’s right. Fluctuation is healing, and I believe it’s a traditional Japanese sensibility that can be said to be the source of comfort.
People are not perfect to begin with. Things made by such people are also imperfect. And this is an irreplaceable comfort. Life is much richer when you can recognize the beauty hidden in imperfection. I will shed “perfection” and create things that cherish “fluctuation.” Stir your emotions!
